A malformed\n> symmetry-operation string caused the parser to read past the end of its\n> internal buffer while formatting the description.\n>\n> ### Impact\n>\n> Open Babel is a C++ library and CLI used to read and write chemistry\n> file formats; it is shipped by Linux distributions and embedded in\n> services that may parse untrusted input. Triggering this vulnerability\n> requires the victim to open a malicious CIF file with the `obabel`\n> tool, the OBConversion API, or any of the language bindings.\n>\n> ### Affected versions\n>\n> All releases up to and including 3.1.1.\n>\n> ### Patched version\n>\n> 3.2.0 (released 2026-05-26).\n>\n> ### Patch\n>\n> Fix commit: https://github.com/openbabel/openbabel/commit/e23a224b\n> Tracked in #2862.\n>\n> A minimized reproducer for this CVE is checked in at\n> `test/files/fuzz_regress/cve-2026-2704.cif` and is exercised on every\n> CI build under ASAN+UBSAN by the `fuzzregresstest` harness.\n>\n> ### Credit\n>\n> Reported by Vedant Madane (@VedantMadane).\n\n## Affected packages\n\n- `openbabel < 3.2.0`\n\n## Remediation\n\nUpgrade to a patched release:\n\n- `openbabel 3.2.0`","depth":"sunlit","depthScore":24,"depthScoreParts":{"impact":24.2,"likelihood":0.2,"exploitation":0,"ransomware":0},"changes":[]}
